About The Coffee

What’s brewing this month?

From Tanzania , we welcome this delightful Coffee of the Month - Iyenga.

This cup is bursting with flavours of Cherry, Red Currant & Lemon Balm.

This limited edition Coffee of the Month makes for a wonderful filter coffee.

More about the Coffee:

For the month of May, we’ve selected an interesting coffee from Tanzania — a country rich in natural beauty and geographical diversity. Located in East Africa, Tanzania is home to soaring mountains, sweeping plains, and vast lakes. In the northeast, you'll find Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s tallest peak, surrounded by lush forested areas. The country also borders the Great Lakes region, including Lake Victoria and Lake Tanganyika.

This washed coffee called Iyenga comes from the Iyenga Cooperative, based in the Songwe region. Known for a rich agricultural production – in the south of Tanzania, bordering Zambia and Malawi. This is the location of the Mbozi District, populated with 175 villages and around 515,000 people.

The cooperative was established in 2003, with a membership of 64 farmers, and it has since grown to 193 members. Most members' farms are between 0.5 and 1.5 hectares, and most are intercropped with bananas, beans and ground nuts, though coffee production is the primary source of income.

In the last decade, the cooperative has invested a lot in its machinery, including a new eco-depulper which they could finance through governmental funds and the construction of a new wet mill.

Members deliver their coffee cherries to a central processing unit, where the coffee is washed, and then fermented in tanks for 12 to 24 hours. And finally, the coffee is washed again with clean water and put on raised drying tables until it’s dried to 11 to 12 percent moisture.

Brewing the coffee from Iyenga gives you an exquisite complex and clean cup: with medium body, citric acidity and notes of dark fruits and spices. We think of black cherries, red currant and stewed plum with a dark chocolate and bergamot aftertaste. This coffee is very aromatic too. On a dry smell you can discover a subtle fragrance of chamomile; when brewing, there is an intense aroma of black pepper, cloves or lemon balm.

How does coffee of the month work?

We produce a brand spanking new coffee, every month. If you’re someone who thinks variety is the spice of life - this one's for you.

Our Coffee of the Month gives us the opportunity to shine a light on a specific grower or community as we explore amazingly diverse coffees from all around the world.

Perky Blenders

At Perky Blenders, we like to think of ourselves as one big family. That’s because family is in the very foundations of our business: we were family-formed back in 2015 by husband and wife duo Adam and Victoria Cozens.Even back then, operating as a humble little coffee cart outside St James’ Street station, we had the same aims as we do now: to be responsible, friendly and accessible to all.

It’s still us here. Hello. And though we’ve since stretched our latte-fuelled legs beyond that converted three-wheeled Piaggio Ape, we’re the same coffee up-and-comers waxing lyrical about single origin beans to the good people of Waltham Forest.A few years on, we now have three shops within the borough, and supply to over 60 stores – including Whole Foods, The Conran Shop, Anthropology, and the award-winning Eat17 Spar shops.

In the last few years, we’ve been featured in the Indy Best’s ‘Best Coffee Subscription Services,’ and have won two Time Out Awards as the ‘Best Coffee Place’ within three London Postcodes. And we’ve opened our second roastery, with a state-of-the-art 20kg Petrocini Specialty Roaster that we’re pretty proud of, and plenty more space to swing cats/coffee sacks.Coffee can sometimes be a secretive, snobbish industry – but we want to change that perception. So whether you’re a V60 veteran or you’re just taking your first baby(chino) steps in learning how to brew, you’re welcome in the Perky family.
