About The Coffee

The Story

On the island of Java, nestled within the Regency of Situbondo, lies Koperasi Surya Abada Kayumas (KSU Kayumas). This cooperative is formed by 145 dedicated family-owned farms across the neighbouring villages of Curah Tatal and Kayumas. These smallholders, averaging around two hectares each, manage approximately 1500 trees in a remote, high-altitude landscape that demands both resilience and expertise.

Traditional Craft Meets Modern Innovation

The Kayumas cooperative is a hub of traditional Indonesian coffee culture, primarily producing the classic Giling Basah(wet-hulled) process. However, they are far from stuck in the past; recent expansions have seen the group master sophisticated anaerobic and wet-hulled anaerobic processing methods, bringing a modern edge to their deep-rooted heritage.

More Than Just a Harvest

Since gaining certification in 2018, KSU Kayumas has used Fairtrade premiums to transform their community. This isn't just about coffee; it’s about the future of the region. Your support contributes to:

Organic Agroforestry: Implementing landslide prevention, shade-grown practices, and biodiversity protection.
Infrastructure: Building vital roads, warehouses, and sanitation facilities that have been life-changing for the remote local villages.
Education & Equality: Hosting workshops to engage the next generation of farmers and actively working to rebalance gender inequalities within the industry.

We, at Wogan Coffee, have been lovingly hand-roasting speciality, ethical, sustainable and traceable coffees since 1970. In our third generation, and a wholly independent family company, you can find us rooted in Bristol; the same city as when Mr Wogan established the business over fifty years ago. Laura and James, grandchildren of the bowler hatted gentleman, now have the ropes firmly in their grasp; James as our resident Q Grader in the Bristol Roastery Headquarters, and Laura in London.

As a wholly independent family company, living and breathing coffee for 50 years, Wogan Coffee have learnt a lot along the way - not only about coffee, but how climate affects all our futures, here and in coffee growing regions.
