About The Coffee

Perunor works with smallholder coffee producers across northern Peru, supporting farming systems that prioritize soil health, biodiversity, and longterm sustainability. Most member farms operate on steep, forested slopes where coffee is grown under natural shade canopies. This approach protects native flora and fauna, reduces soil erosion, and helps maintain stable microclimates that improve cherry development. Producers rely on organic fertilisation methods—such as composting, using farmgenerated inputs, and incorporating leaf litter—to build nutrientrich soils without synthetic chemicals.

Water use is managed carefully, especially during postharvest processing. Many members use ecofriendly depulping systems that reduce water consumption, and fermentation is monitored to maintain consistent quality while minimising waste. Perunor provides training on wastewater management, encouraging producers to filter or repurpose processing water to avoid contamination of local streams.

Sustainability is reinforced through multiple certification programs, including Organic, Fair Trade, and Rainforest Alliance. These standards guide producers in responsible land management, wildlife protection, and safe labour practices. Certification also opens access to premium markets, allowing members to earn higher and more stable prices for their coffee.

Perunor invests heavily in technical assistance. Field technicians visit farms to support pruning cycles, pestmanagement strategies, and selective harvesting. Emphasis is placed on integrated pest management (IPM), which reduces reliance on chemical controls by combining shade management, resistant varieties, and natural predators. These practices help producers maintain healthy plants and improve yields over time.

The impact on member families is significant. Sustainable farming methods reduce input costs, improve soil fertility, and increase resilience to climate variability. Training programs strengthen producers’ ability to manage their farms efficiently, while certifications and quality improvements lead to better income opportunities.
