Four exceptional women. Two brilliant varietals. One phenomenal coffee producing country. With a combination of a common and a rare varietal, this natural process coffee presents sweetness lifted by the delicacy of floral notes, a celebration of collaborative spirit and a shifting landscape in coffee production.

Our Brazil coffee partner, SMC, initiated a coffee program in 2018 focusing on empowering women coffee producers with plenty of support on pre- and post-harvest agronomical training to elevate the coffee quality from the female producers. This program, Donas do Café (Women of Coffee) celebrates farms where women play an active leadership role, whether as owners, managers of post-harvest processing, quality control or any other area. For the first iteration of this product, we invited some of our customers and all our team members to select their favourite coffees on the table, and Beija Flor – named after the Portuguese word for “hummingbird”, was the winner of the selections.

This is a naturally processed single origin coffee from Brazil provided by 4 women producers: Idivane Araújo, Ciomara de Carvalho, Julia Ribeiro do Valle & Carmen Lúcia Chaves de Brito. The selection of these 4 coffee producers is based on the size of farm and the harmony of coffee flavour profile. It is necessary to have one bigger coffee farm to provide enough volume to blend with small coffee producers. Without doing so, most of the smaller coffee producers would be neglected and might end up selling their coffee into commodity market even though they produce really good quality of coffee.

Beija Flor is a layered coffee with a lot of sweetness. It’s a naturally processed coffee since it is the most sustainable way for the producers to process due to limited infrastructure and uses the least amount of water in processing. The varieties in this year’s Beija Flor are red & yellow catuaí, and yellow catucaí.
