Named after a mythological forest guardian by the indigenous Tupí-Guaraní people this 100% organic coffee is the direct result of FAF coffee’s efforts to use all the coffee from their production and not just the highest grade. It’s an effort that aims to reduce waste that can be endemic in farms that want to promote organic practices. Fazenda Fortaleza has been owned by the Barretto Family since 1850.

Originally a traditional farm using conventional methods, it was transformed by Silvia Barretto and husband Marcos Croce, who envisioned converting it into a sustainable business prioritizing environmental stewardship and community relationships while producing high-quality products. In 2009, their son Felipe joined full-time after working at Kaldi’s specialty coffee roastery in St. Louis, establishing a coffee lab to study varietals and processing methods.

Today, FAF serves as an experimental model farm for organic coffee production, embracing sustainability and regenerative farming practices. The farm operates as a multi-functional landscape combining shaded coffee systems, natural forests, and ecological restoration areas providing habitat for biodiversity from native bees to threatened maned wolves. The farm integrates biodiversity into coffee production at all levels, testing agroforestry models that enhance nutrient cycling, biomass production, natural pest control, and optimal shade cover.

Additionally, FAF operates an on-farm biofactory producing microorganisms applied to fields for pest control while enhancing soil resilience and plant growth.
