About The Coffee

Mikiyas Bogale, who inherited the Ethiopian Gerse Kebele washing station from his father in 2020, now works with coffee producers all across the Gerse area to produce around 300 bags of high quality coffee every year.

The coffee is grown at 2,000 to 2,200 metres above sea level in clay soil, shaded by local trees like Wanza, Girar, and Weyira. The lot enclosed is made up of the local landrace and heirloom varieties, that are so often used in Ethiopian coffee, and give the Yirgacheffe region its signature character.

Undergoing a washed process, the ripe cherries for this lot are harvested and purchased from smallholders, then pre-sorted before pulping with a local Agard pulping machine. The coffee is density-sorted by floating, then fermented in large concrete tanks for 48 to 72 hours depending on the weather. Washing takes place in channels before the parchment moves to raised beds, where it dries and undergoes further hand sorting for defects. Once moisture levels are checked and final sorting is complete, the coffee rests in parchment onsite before being transported to Addis Ababa.

The final result is a sweet, jammy cup, packed full of blueberry, raspberry ripple, and golden syrup flavour notes.
