About The Coffee

Please note: this is a very special lot, so we roast it in small batches every Tuesday. Your order will be dispatched once your coffee has been freshly roasted, so you may have to wait until the following Tuesday for your whole order to arrive.

We’re delighted to share this coffee from El Equimite, a remarkable farm in Veracruz, Mexico, led by Gibrán Cervantes. Gibrán combines traditional farming knowledge, biodiversity and deep respect for the land to grow expressive coffees while protecting the ecosystem they depend on.

El Equimite is what Gibrán calls an “edible forest”: a living farm where coffee grows beneath the native canopy alongside fruit trees, medicinal plants, wildlife and a natural lake. It’s one of the few Demeter-certified biodynamic coffee farms in the world, managed as a connected, living system. Its cool, misty cloud forest climate slows cherry maturation, developing the sweetness, clarity and complexity we love in the cup.

Gibrán’s work also extends beyond his own farm. Through Ensambles, a project he founded, he brings producers together to share knowledge, strengthen communities and explore more sustainable ways of farming. His aim is not just exceptional coffee at El Equimite, but a more resilient future for coffee across Mexico, showing how quality and sustainability can grow together.

Caravan

Caravan was started by three kiwis, Chris, Laura and Miles. We moved over to London from New Zealand In the early 2000s and started working, eating and drinking our way around town, Europe and the world, all the while getting ideas and thinking “when we open our own place…”

ONE OF THE THINGS WE MISSED MOST ABOUT HOME WAS A GOOD CUP OF COFFEE...

And the effortless, relaxed coffee house culture that surrounded it back in NZ.

At some point, it was only natural that our journey of food, drink and restaurant exploration should combine with our love of coffee, and it did when we started Caravan Exmouth Market in 2010.

All Caravan coffee is roasted on our Loring Peregrine S70. Loring make the most efficient roasters around, and ours is no different. It roasts coffee with hot air that is recirculated to recapture energy, using up to 80% less gas than a direct gas flame.

Our commitment to sustainability doesn’t stop when we sell our coffee. As part of 1% for the planet, Caravan Coffee Roasters donate 1% of our annual revenue to environmental causes including Project Waterfall's work in coffee growing communities effected by climate change.
