About The Coffee

In Guerrero, farmers have very small lots growing their coffee in forests surrounding their homes in much the same way that a lot of Ethiopian coffee is. Coffee trees are grown in the wilds around the farmers home alongside other crops and flora. This creates a default biodiversity. This is an ancient practice of the indigenous producers in the area, where tradition and spirituality combine to benefit the product and the environment.

This form of agroforestry has now been proven to increase farm productivity and profitability, reduce soil erosion, create wildlife habitat, improve soil structure, and help with carbon sequestration – the storing of carbon dioxide. In simple terms this means that carbon dioxide is captured by the forest and essentially stored underground, reducing the farm's impact on global warming. Guerrero has long been overlooked by the Mexican Government and communities here have historically been very vulnerable to cartels.

Coffee farmers were only able to sell to coyotes who would often cheat or go back on promises. This history meant it took a lot of work for our friends at Ensambles to build trust in this region. But over the years working in the region they, and we, have seen improvements to the communities and a desire to invest in improving the quality of their crop each year.

Caravan

Caravan was started by three kiwis, Chris, Laura and Miles. We moved over to London from New Zealand In the early 2000s and started working, eating and drinking our way around town, Europe and the world, all the while getting ideas and thinking “when we open our own place…”

ONE OF THE THINGS WE MISSED MOST ABOUT HOME WAS A GOOD CUP OF COFFEE...

And the effortless, relaxed coffee house culture that surrounded it back in NZ.

At some point, it was only natural that our journey of food, drink and restaurant exploration should combine with our love of coffee, and it did when we started Caravan Exmouth Market in 2010.

All Caravan coffee is roasted on our Loring Peregrine S70. Loring make the most efficient roasters around, and ours is no different. It roasts coffee with hot air that is recirculated to recapture energy, using up to 80% less gas than a direct gas flame.

Our commitment to sustainability doesn’t stop when we sell our coffee. As part of 1% for the planet, Caravan Coffee Roasters donate 1% of our annual revenue to environmental causes including Project Waterfall's work in coffee growing communities effected by climate change.
