About The Coffee

Nafkot’s farm covers two hectares in Gedicho, Yirgacheffe, at an elevation of 2,170 MASL. She also operates her own processing station on the farm, giving her control over the harvesting and processing of her coffee from coffee tree through to drying.

Nafkot is one of the women participating in Ephtah Coffee’s Ama Commitment Project, which was established to provide practical support to female coffee producers. As part of the programme, Ephtah provided new mesh drying beds, allowing Nafkot to dry her coffee more slowly and evenly and helping improve both quality and consistency.

Ephtah also provides Nafkot with pre-financing, paying her 80% of the expected value of her cherries in advance. This gives her the cash flow needed to pay seasonal workers immediately during harvest, rather than waiting until the coffee has been sold.

The project extends beyond coffee production. Through its Ama Commitment Income Diversification Scheme, Ephtah has established a shop where participating women can sell handicrafts, as well as a day-care centre around 3km from the town of Gedicho. Farmers involved in the project also cultivate native banana trees to produce kocho, a traditional local food product. Together, these initiatives are designed to provide additional sources of income and support the wider livelihoods of the women and their communities.

Conscious

We are Culainn and Lea, the team behind Conscious. We began our journey into coffee in South America, building relationships with a small number of producers, with whom we work today.

To be conscious is to be aware, self-reflective and to make considered choices. Through being conscious we work to deliver the best coffee for everyone. Practically, we do this by working closely with our partners at every stage of the production of coffee, from farm to cup, constantly learning, teaching and sharing. In this way, Conscious aims to be an agent for progress, and for strengthening connections between people in a complex and messy world.

We roast coffee to produce aromas and flavours that celebrate the innate properties of the beans and the work that went into their production. We start by understanding the physical properties and unique precursors of flavour of each coffee lot. We then meticulously plan and fine-tune every roast to develop these flavours. Through continuous testing and iteration we strive for perfection.
