James Gourmet Coffee

Boozy Fruity Cocktail

On opening, if you have rested this coffee for a few weeks, you would be forgiven for asking, “What is this?” because it is not quite like anything else! My first taste is very different from the aromatics. Is this chocolatey? Savoury? Two degrees later, a soft acidity emerges with a little boozy edge to it. Although this is a light roast, it has a superb depth of flavour. Lychee-blueberry, cooling to raspberry. This is a boozy fruit cocktail, and we just love it!

About The Coffee

Here is a new coffee process that, from here on, will be referred to as an experimental Natural. It was going to be called an F1; however, this means other things in the world of coffee and horticulture.

Here is the first season of a new process that has been produced by Rwamatamu. Gaston observed how alternative processes had won the best coffees in Rwanda, and this is his interpretation. Let’s face it, we rarely do anything truly original individually or as a species. Cough, cough, Google.

This process is a cross between a natural and an anaerobic process, where the cherries are piled in a triangular mound on the drying beds and covered. This creates some of the advantages of a natural, but deeper, wilder red fruity characteristics.

I love the fact that if you trawl the internet looking for almost anything Rwanda and coffee related, Rwamatamu pops up. It’s a great thing that so many coffee roasters are part of this story. Historically, Rwanda has been a big part of our year, and we buy a lot relatively speaking.

If you would like to know a little more about the very basics of Rwandan Coffee, I wrote a brief outline on our blog. There are some great links to the UN (who have a great educational website) and the NAEB. It was interesting for me anyway!

James Gourmet Coffee

Who are we?

James Gourmet Coffee (JGC from here on in) is a small family company hidden away in the market town of Ross-on-Wye. Our team is small but dedicated to the production of high quality specialty coffee. Like a family, we stick together and more than half of our team have been in over a decade, at the time of writing! We are SO fortunate as our business is ALL about people.

What are we?

We are a professional single site, non-cafe owning coffee roasting company that predominantly serves the Food Service Trade. (Not being fans of the word Industry for numerous reasons, don’t get Peter started). JGC is simply about people and gourmet coffee. As a company we deliver incredible value for money, making specialty coffee approachable and affordable. In our company we only sell one quality of coffee which is specialty. We don’t reduce our coffee spend at the cost of branding or shiny, slick sales people’s sales bonuses. One quality, one price that we can deliver at consistently.

Why are we still current?

JGC has been a roasting and learning curve, that has been a privilege and an adventure connecting with growers, suppliers and customers from all over the world to people on our doorstep. We have worked with big names in the coffee world and whilst keeping our values have led the way with the first eco roaster in Europe and now investing in recyclable packaging because we can. One thing that experience gives us is a little foresight and the next few years of coffee are about to get as exciting as the first were. Environmental credentials and real sustainability are high up on everyone’s list, so we hope there will be more players paying the real cost too, to make a long term future for coffee in the UK and beyond.
