About The Coffee

This bright, fresh blend is named after the home of Moon Roast, the beautiful Candover Valley in the heart of rural Hampshire. A very special place, unknown to many, this blend is inspired by that first cup of coffee looking out over the stunning views that surround the roastery.

/ Peru San Ignacio, Chirinos | washed | 1700 masl | mixed varietals

This lot is a blend of day lots from producers around the La Coipa, San Ignacio district. Producers in these areas pick and process their coffee themselves and usually dry the coffee on a lined patio. The processing involves resting the cherries after harvesting for 24 hours before removing all the floaters, depulping, and fermenting for 24-36 hours, followed by 10-14 days of drying. Producers bring their parchment to our warehouse in Jaén. The parchment bags are sampled for physical analysis and then for sensory analysis. On the same day, the producer receives a price based on the results of the two analyses, and the bank transfer is made instantly. Afterwards, the parchment bags are repacked with an extra plastic bag to maintain quality all the way prior to milling and exporting. Our founder Fran recently journeyed to Peru, with his eldest son Tom, to meet our producers in San Ignacio. This district is one of the most well-known areas for quality coffee in Peru.  Many producers still have the old, pure Arabica varieties with some ancient Bourbon plants scattered among them. Here there are ideal growing conditions for coffee with altitudes above 1700masl and the area is truly starting to showcase much of its hidden potential.

/ Colombia San Sebastián | washed | 1700-2000 masl | Caturra & Castillo

This coffee is produced by smallholder growers in Inzá municipality. Part of the Tierradentro region located on the western side of Cauca, a region that is 80% inhabited by an indigenous tribe called the Paeces.

The average size of the farms here is 0.5 to 1.5 hectares, each producing microlots. Working together as a community they are able to combine their harvests to create a large enough volume to be sold to buyers. Our importers Cofinet collaborate with other small coffee companies, Occicafe Colombia and Globalcafe, to establish a direct relationship with the farmers and have better control of the quality. Grown in a region blessed with volcanic soil and optimum rainfall that allows arabica cultivars to flourish, this environment creates a coffee that is bold and delicious.

Moon Roast Coffee

Nestled deep in the heart of rural Hampshire, Moon Roast is an award winning, specialty coffee roastery with a rich family heritage in the trade. We source ethically and think sustainably, hand roasting in small batches daily.

In 2012, Francis Bradshaw, inspired by a family heritage in the coffee and tea trades spanning four generations, commissioned a Probat Coffee Roaster in a small barn in his backyard and began roasting at night after a day’s work. By the light of the moon and under the watchful gaze of the village owl, Fran set about developing roast profiles for carefully selected beans. Before long he was supplying freshly roasted coffee to local people and businesses. And so Moon Roast was born.
